Flat hammered Wire Chain Part - temporarily named "Twiddle"

What do you need?

A ruler and a cutter,
0,6 - 0,8 mm wire, 85 mm pieces, this is less than 1/16 inch, half of it is too less,
2 long nails, iron knitting needles or something else 2,2 - 2,5 mm diameter, it is less than 2/16 and more than 1/16 inch (wow, it's much easier with millimeters, you have not to divide),
a hammer one end a bit rounded off (Semicircular hammer?) and an anvil, or a flat stone (or anything which will stand it) and a stone with a rounded side,
a file

For the Faulenzer:

A wooden strip about 6 inches long, - 200 x 35 x 15 mm for example
2 nails without heads, 2,2 - 2,5 mm diameter
maybe sand paper

What to do?

I will describe the production process using a faulenzer (this is a technical term). The translation is something like "lazybones". But I must admit, till today I did not use one.

And today (11-03-2010) I made my first faulenzer:
I hammered the 2 nails without heads into the wooden strip up till 6 mm did stick up. The distance between them is 18 mm.
It is quickly made if you have nails without heads, if not you can read about the preparation I did.

How to twiddle "Twiddles"

step a

From the middle of a 85 mm piece of wire you measure the distances to each side and draw it onto the strip. Now you put a piece of wire between the nails using the lines you have drawn.

step b

Bend the right end to the left and the left end to the right.

step b

When all pieces of wire are bent...

step c

take one after the other between two nails or whatever you have with the same diameter (like on the faulenzer) and bend both ends around the nails right at the bottom.

step c

Twiddle both nails 3 times to the right with tension outward. If the distance of the nails on the faulenzer had been bigger you have to twiddle more. Test it beforehand.
Now remove the nails and bend up the ends.

step c

Beat both loops less and the twiddled middle part more with a hammer or a stone. Do not cut away the both wire ends till the piece is enchased.

The original german description shows only a little draft, where you can see how to use the faulenzer.

What did I learn? The next time I will make shorter parts or use thicker wire. Therefore are the tests beforehand.
